Resolution Calling For a Special Election...
RESOLUTION CALLING FOR A SPECIAL ELECTION TO FILL A VACANCY
ON THE SAN MATEO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
Adopted November 20, 2008
WHEREAS Jerry Hill’s election to the State Assembly has created a vacancy on the San Mateo
County Board of Supervisors.
WHEREAS the five-member Board of Supervisors is the governing body of San Mateo County.
WHEREAS the decisions made by the Board affect the lives of every person who lives in the
County, making the selection of the members of the Board a matter of great public importance.
WHEREAS Article 2, section 203, of the San Mateo County Charter requires that vacancies on
the board of supervisors be filled by the People through a special election unless the Board of
Supervisors makes an appointment to fill the vacancy.
WHEREAS Section 203 further provides elections officials with flexibility in scheduling special
elections to fill vacancies on the Board of Supervisors, permitting an election to fill this vacancy
to be consolidated with an anticipated statewide special election on June 2, 2009.
IT IS THEREFORE RESOLVED that the vacancy on the Board of Supervisors created by Jerry
Hill’s election to the State Assembly should be filled by the People of San Mateo County at a
special election rather than through appointment.
